Camera
"Green Street" 2005 - Dir; Lexi Alexander
As Pete enters
the scene to rescue Matt we are shown a low angle close-up of him head butting
and then proceeding to shout at the person he just knocked down. As an audience
member, we would interpret this as him having forcibly taken the power from the
other man who was assaulting Elijah Wood's character. In this shot we also are able
to see the anger on Pete's face causing us to feel empathy for him; as he is
trying to save his friend however this could also unnerve the audience due to
the intimacy of the shot. It makes you think that you would not like to meet
this man in reality. There are quite a few long shots used to establish how
many people there are, especially in the main fight scene. This allows us to
imagine the intimidation felt by the rival characters also the feelings of
protection that the characters feel towards each other and their beliefs.
"When Harry Met Sally" 1989 - Dir; Rob Reiner
As Harry and Sally are talking we see them in a two-shot and there is a use of shot reverse shot to allow the audience to see what is happening. This is appropriate in this scene as not only do we feel more involved by seeing them talk as if to the audience but also being able to see the different reactions between the characters for example as Harry is talking about how he would just say something like he "has an early meeting" and leave the woman. Then we would see the unimpressed look on Sally's face, the female audience would empathise with her and agree whereas the male portion of the audience may react more positively towards Harry's actions. Whilst Sally is "faking it" we are shown several close-ups of the actors faces. The reactions are not only comical but also how we as an audience would react to a similar situation.
Class Performance 7th October to 18th October:
ReplyDeleteKoro, you continue to work very well in class, and you engage with all the tasks you are set. Well done. Your camera analyses identify and use appropriate terms, and often effect on the potential impact on the audience. You haven't completed the Lesson 2 work set, which was to then analysis a sequence using all 3 techniques of mise-en-scene, performance and camera? Your performance analysis for 'The Heat' had some good parts (particularly about physical characteristics), but was weaker on the 'style'. Always remember to be specific about scenes you are referencing (even if you have posted the extract to the blog). I also feel that you need to be pushing yourself a little more, particularly in the work you do outside of class.
Target: Post the analysis you missed from Lesson 2 when I was away. I'd also like you to start to use the 'Stretch and Challenge' page of the Film Studies blog.I'll give you more details on this next week.
